Australia: Corrs partner Michael Chaaya shows that men can have a successful career and work flexibly
Last Updated: 29 September 2015

The second episode in the Equilibrium Man Challenge has been launched this week featuring Corrs Chambers Westgarth partner and Financial Services practice group leader, Michael Chaaya.

The Equilibrium Man Challenge is a documentary series, supported by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), that follows the lives of five men from a range of professions who are changing the way they work. The Challenge aims to accelerate the take-up of flexible work practices so that they become mainstream for men and women

All five men are high achievers who are making the move to flexible working arrangements to accommodate family and other interests by changing their work hours, reducing work hours or working some days from home.

The second round of episodes launched this week reveal the challenges they are facing on the way – like carving out personal and family time; fitting demanding workloads into reduced hours and negotiating with managers and colleagues – and their commitment to overcoming them.

Michael Chaaya commented: "Taking part in the Equilibrium Man Challenge has made me more passionate than ever about the importance of flexibility in the workplace. In a profession where "round the clock" client service and availability is the norm, I feel a genuine responsibility and desire to challenge the assumption that flexibility is not for everyone.

"I want to see the debate about flexibility move away from the time-honoured discussion about "work/life balance" and move towards recognition of the complexity of people's lives. My vision is that the Equilibrium Man Challenge will allow people to reconfigure their assumptions about workplace flexibility and make a long-lasting generational change. Lawyers need to be bold and challenge the way work has traditionally been done in a law firm and flexibility is a key enabler to making this happen."
