UK: Wragge & Co Real Estate, Projects And Corporate Groups Advise On £100 Million Coventry Arena
Last Updated: 22 April 2004

Wragge & Co LLP Real Estate, Projects and Corporate Groups are all advising on the new £100 million development of the new Coventry Arena. The development includes a new 32,000 seater stadium for Coventry City Football Club, 91,000 square feet of exhibition and concert facilities, 27,000 square feet of conference meetings and banqueting facilities and a 90,000 square feet casino. The Coventry Arena will be run by Arena Coventry Limited, a joint venture between Coventry City Council and The Alan Edward Higgs Charity, and is due to open in 2005.

Partner Huw Roberts and associate Kultar Khangura are leading the real estate team with projects partner David Fennell advising Arena Coventry on the site acquisition, development and the lettings. Separately, corporate partner Andrew B Smith is advising The Alan Edwards Higgs Charity – a charity dedicated to benefiting the residents of the Coventry area - on the acquisition of its 50 per cent stake in the joint venture with Coventry City Council. In investing in the Arena Project, the Charity Trustees have taken advantage of new guidance issued by the Charity Commissioners to encourage strategic change through social investment. The team is working with Paul Fletcher, chief executive of Arena Coventry, Stella Manzie, chief executive, John McGuigan, head of development - both of Coventry City Council – and Clarissa Evans, commercial group leader of the Council’s Legal & Democratic Services Division.

This is the second major project where Wragge & Co has advised The Alan Edward Higgs Charity. Earlier this year (2003), commercial development partner Sue Bennett led a team advising on the £8 million development of the Alan Higgs Centre, a new community leisure complex in Coventry. Due to open in 2004, the 125 hectare site will provide a range of leisure facilities for local residents, including an indoor sports hall, fitness suite and health spa. It will also become the ‘home’ to Coventry City FC’s Youth Academy.

Patrick Twist and Rosemary Jackson of Pinsents Birmingham are advising Coventry City Council. Michael Jepson of Gordon Dadds is advising Coventry City FC.
