Ireland: Walkers Ireland Trainee Solicitors Describe Their Early Career At Walkers (Part One)
Last Updated: 23 September 2015

As Walkers Ireland is looking to recruit for the 2017 Trainee Programme we thought it a good idea to ask the current trainees about their experiences at Walkers so far...

Name: Nuala Clarke

Trainee Solicitor at Walkers
BA International (Spanish and French), University College Dublin
Masters in Common Law, University College Dublin

What attracted you to Walkers?

They say when you find the right place for your training contract something just clicks and this was definitely the case for me in Walkers. I grew up in London, went to university in Dublin and spent a year studying in Spain and I knew that I wanted to pursue my career in a similar diverse and international environment. Walkers have eight offices internationally and this broad spectrum of experience can be felt among your colleagues, in the diversity of the deals and the quality of the work - so it felt like the perfect fit.

The Interview Process

The interview process was one of the friendliest I've experienced. Every effort was made to put me at my ease and the calls for second interviews and offers were all within a few days of the first interview, which made a real difference.

My Walkers experience so far

I am currently completing my first rotation on the Structured Products and Capital Markets team which has given me both general corporate and banking experience as well as insight into the specialised area of debt capital markets. We have worked on a number of award winning transactions this year including many "market firsts". I was impressed by the level of responsibility that I have been given, which has built my confidence, and the team's generosity with its time and interest in teaching trainees.

Looking forward there is Blackhall on the horizon, but also a number of different rotations in areas of the financial services market where Ireland is currently excelling and the chance to qualify into a firm where there are opportunities for growth and development.

What attracted you to Walkers?

What most attracted me to Walkers was the combination of the size, the calibre and international footprint of the firm. In its practice areas, Walkers is at the very top of the industry. Even though Walkers is a relatively recent international entrant to the Irish legal market, the Dublin office continues to grow quickly and has won some major mandates with market leading and household names. Trainees are involved in all phases of a deal from start to finish. This means that you get great exposure to challenging, cutting-edge and stimulating work as a trainee.

The Interview Process

I found the interview process at Walkers to be much more down to earth than at many of the other commercial firms in Dublin. I felt that Walkers were interested in getting to know me and to ensure that my personality was a good match for the firm. The partners who interviewed me were very nice and put me at ease and the whole process, while totally professional, was also very personable.

My Walkers experience so far

I am currently doing my first seat in the Real Estate department. It's a very busy department and so I've had plenty of exposure to substantive and interesting work. We handle a lot of large, complex transactions which often involve many different departments from within the firm. It has been very interesting to see how all of the different areas come together to complete a deal and to provide clients with seamless multi-disciplinary and, sometimes, cross-jurisdictional advice. I have really enjoyed my time at Walkers thus far and I am looking forward to working here for many years to come.
