Australia: New Head of Freehills' Perth Office
Last Updated: 1 April 2004

Peter Mansell, the Head of Freehills' Perth office, has decided to retire from the Freehills partnership to concentrate on non-executive directorships.

At various times since 1990, Mr Mansell has been on the firm's National Board and has been the firm's National Chairman, International Partner (responsible for its overseas operations), Managing Partner in Perth, member of the National Executive and Head of Perth office. According to Freehills' CEO Peter Hay, his contribution to the Perth office and the entire firm has been outstanding.

'Peter has brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to all his roles at Freehills, and he has also developed strong relationships with the business community in Western Australia,' said Mr Hay. 'He has dedicated himself to the firm in all of his roles, and the reputation of Freehills in the WA community is due in no small part to his efforts. He will be missed, but we wish him all the best for his future.'

Mr Mansell has been a commercial lawyer for more than 30 years and, prior to joining Freehills, was a partner in a major South African law firm. He has worked across widespread areas of the law. Peter holds various directorships, is involved in community organisations and is also a fellow of and the immediate past President of the Council of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Western Australia Division.

Mr Mansell will stay associated with Freehills to ensure a smooth transition for clients and staff. His replacement as Head of Office is John Atkins, a commercial lawyer of 25 years experience, who was Head of Freehills' Melbourne office for two years until January last year when he transferred back to his home-town of Perth. He has also been Freehills' National Practice Partner and its International Partner. Mr Atkins was Managing Partner of Perth firm Parker & Parker when it merged with Freehills. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has also held various external board appointments.

'The Perth office is in good hands with John taking over this role,' Mr Hay said. 'His experience and commitment to the firm will ensure Freehills maintains its premier position in the WA market with a continued high level of service to clients.'
