Canada: Louise Arbour Named One Of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers

Toronto (August 4, 2015)Canadian Lawyer named the Honourable Louise Arbour, counsel with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers of 2015. The list recognizes leaders in the Canadian justice system and legal profession. Madam Arbour was listed as a top vote recipient in the World Stage category for the second year in a row.

She is most deserving of this honour because of her commitment to using her influence to champion access to justice," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO, BLG. "Since joining the firm she has actively supported the pro bono work of her colleagues and has given her time and insight to several important legal issues with social impact."

This is the seventh year Canadian Lawyer has honoured select members of the country's legal community. The list has five categories: Changemakers; Government, Non-Profit and Associations; Criminal Law and Human Rights; Corporate and Commercial Law; and the World Stage. All honorees were peer-nominated and voted-upon by members of the legal profession. With more than 100 nominees and more than 6,000 votes cast, the Canadian Lawyer editorial team decided the Top 25. Top vote recipients were named in each category with four additional, unranked honourees recognized in each category.

Madam Arbour is counsel and jurist in residence at BLG. In this capacity, she provides strategic advice to lawyers of the International Trade Litigation and Arbitration Group, in particular on issues pertaining to international disputes. She also serves as a mentor to younger lawyers. Prior to joining BLG she was the CEO of International Crisis Group. She also sat as a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1999 to 2004, and on the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Ontario. She has held senior positions at the United Nations, including that of High Commissioner for Human Rights, and is a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy and of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty.
