United States: Gary Born Appointed Inaugural Senior Visiting Research Fellow At The New Zealand Centre For International Economic Law (NZCIEL)
Last Updated: April 15 2015

Gary Born, Chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, has been appointed the Inaugural Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the New Zealand Centre for International Economic Law (NZCIEL).  He will be in residence from 29 April to 6 May 2015.

NZCIEL was established in 2007 at Victoria University's Law Faculty in Wellington as an interdisciplinary centre of research excellence on all issues relating to international economic law. The goal of the centre is to provide a forum for discussion and debate leading to quality research in the field.  While in New Zealand Mr. Born will discuss his recent initiative, a Bilateral Arbitration Treaty regime, which aims to provide a default arbitration mechanism for the resolution of defined international commercial disputes. He will meet with leading members of New Zealand's political, administrative, legal and business communities.

Mr. Born will also speak at a breakfast meeting to be held at the Arbitrators' and Mediators' Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) in Auckland and, to mark the 30 year anniversary of the Rainbow Warrior case in which Mr. Born acted as counsel for Greenpeace, he will participate in a public discussion forum, titled "The Rainbow Warrior - A Game Changer? A 30 Year Retrospective."

Mr. Born also serves as Professor of Law at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University School of Law in Beijing.  He has taught at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, University of Pennsylvania School of Law, National University of Singapore, Peking University School of Transnational Law, and elsewhere. He is the author of International Commercial Arbitration (2nd edition, 2014 Kluwer Law International), which is the leading commentary in the field.
