On April 6, 2017, the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories released a report by Cassels Brock partner Thomas Isaac on Aboriginal land claims negotiations in the Southeast Northwest Territories. Tom was appointed as Ministerial Special Representative regarding the Akaitcho Dene and the Northwest Territory Métis Nation negotiations & related overlapping interests in July 2016. A separate report on the Dehcho Process was also released.

According to a press release issued by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, these reports "highlight current challenges in negotiations and provide recommendations to address them, provide the opportunity for a path forward with each Indigenous group in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration."

The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, noted: "The reports released today will guide how we conclude these claims in a timely and meaningful way that will strengthen our nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous peoples in the NWT."
