Nations), the Canadian Park sand Wilderness Society and the Yukon
Conservation Society are suing the Yukon government over the land
use plan for the Peel River watershed on the basis that it violates
land claims agreements signed by the First Nations. The
government indicated that it would not ban mining in an area the
size of the Peel River watershed and allows mining in about 70% of
the region, subject to many restrictions on the exploration
activities and allows existing mining properties to remain open for
exploration and development, subject to the terms of the watershed
