New amendments to Regulation 347 under the Environmental Protection Act are broadening the training requirements for drivers involved in waste management operations.

Prior to this amendment, all drivers involved in transporting hazardous and liquid industrial waste were subject to mandatory training in areas such as the operation of waste management equipment, relevant legislation, and emergency management procedures.

When the amendments are put into place on November 18, 2013, the requirements will be extended to include drivers transporting municipal waste.

Although most companies conducting waste management operations already train all drivers, for some this will be a significant change. To ease the transition, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ontario Waste Management Association have made online resources available for consultation:
