The Brazilian PTO (INPI) launched two studies that were developed under a cooperation agreement with the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (ABIQUIM). The studies have been developed from information available in patent documents in order to identify stakeholders of interest (inventors and institutions involved in the development of inventions), promote technological monitoring (technology trends, emerging technologies etc.) and check the freedom to operate (FTO) in different markets.
The study "Technological Opportunities for the Brazilian chemical industry" shows the results of the analysis of the number of patent applications filed worldwide during 2004-2014 in the following areas: chemical products for leather, adhesives and sealants, unsaturated polyesters, consumables for rubber, silicones, pigments and dyes.
In turn, the study "Use of silicones on flame resistant electrical cables" shows the ranking of patent applicants (regarding the number of filed patent applications worlwide) in the field. Large chemical companies stand in the ranking, with the Japanese Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd. ranking first.
For the silicon study 5,741 patent applications from companies that are not members of ABIQUIM were analyzed. Of them, 4,155 applications were not filed in Brazil. Therefore, their technologies are free to be exploited in the country.
