In the July 18, 2016, Federal Register, FDA issued a final rule amending the food additive regulations to expand the safe uses of Vitamin D2 as a nutrient supplement in edible plant-based milk and yogurt alternatives, and of Vitamin D3 as a nutrient supplement in milk at levels higher than those currently permitted. The final rule was issued in response to a food additive petition filed by the Dean Foods Company and WhiteWave Foods Company. The rule was effective July 18, 2016.
