Summary and implications

This week, Nominet (the UK's domain registry operator) launched the registration for shorter .uk domain names − such as < website.uk >.

As explained in our alert last year, holders of existing third level .uk domains (such as .co.uk or .org.uk) have special rights to the .uk equivalent of their existing domain registration. These special rights last for five years, expiring on 10 June 2019.

Further information can be found at Nominet's .uk launch website here.

Action

We recommend that you review your domain name portfolio now and consider if you wish to register equivalent, or indeed new, .uk domains.

Nominet's charges will be the same as for current .co.uk domains: £3.50 for a single year or £2.50 per year for multi-year registrations. Nominet is not a retailer, so you will need to arrange any registrations with your usual domain name registrar.
