The province of Upper Austria is Austria's leading business location, accounting for 25% of industrial production (ATS 200 billion/US$ 15.4 billion in 1996) with only 17% of the population.

Growth sectors including automotive, machinery, and pharmaceuticals are represented by such renowned firms as BMW, Hoffmann-La Roche, Novartis and Trumpf, Europe's largest machinery manufacturer.

The information technology industry has been established in a vibrant cluster of innovative start-ups and internationally active R&D institutes in Greater Linz, including the Fuzzy Logic Laboratory and the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation.

And this year has seen record investment and business expansion activity, with 27 projects bringing in ATS 8 billion (US$ 615 million) and 1000 new jobs.

Finally, Upper Austria offers a range of incentives, including incentives for teleworker jobs, interest-rate reductions of 1-2 percent on development loans from Bank Braunau, and sensational prices for industrial properties offered by several communities.

In particular, provincial officials led by Vice Governor Christoph Leitl are capitalizing on the boom in the call center business to attract telephone service firms to Upper Austria.
